Puitika was established in 2004 as a printed journal by the Indonesian Literature Department, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Andalas. The online edition was launched in 2015 with the publication of Volume 11, Number 1. Since its transition to digital dissemination, Puitika has continued to publish peer-reviewed scholarly work in linguistics, literature, and cultural studies. The journal is issued biannually, in April and September. In September 2023, Puitika was officially accredited as a Sinta 5 journal.
