Abstract
This study aims to identify kinship terms in kaba Rancak di Labuah and analyze their referential and vocative functions. It employs a descriptive qualitative approach, using the text as the data source. The data were collected through observation and note-taking activities and analyzed by using referential and pragmatic identity analyses. The analysis was performed to identify the referential and vocative functions of the kinship terms in Rancak di Labuah. It can be concluded that there are 27 forms of the kinship terms used to indicate genealogical, marriage, customary, and groups of relatives. Several forms, including mandeh, mandeh kanduang, anak, and niniak mamak, perform both functions, while nak and nak kanduang serve vocative functions. Furthermore, the terms' functions cannot be identified based on their form and the relationship they indicate; the functions should be identified through the context of the conversation. This study is expected to encourage the importance of distinguishing forms, relationships, and functions of the kinship terms for analyzing related texts in Minangkabau literary works.
